The SMS Research Foundation was created in 2010 with the singular goal of raising much-needed funds for research grants to study Smith-Magenis Syndrome. The foundation is proud to have recently awarded their second annual $50,000 grant to Sarah Elsea, Ph.D., an Associate Professor of Pediatrics & Human and Molecular Genetics at the Virginia Commonwealth University School of Medicine. The title of her project is “A cell culture model to detect drug-induced expression of RAI-1”.
The project has two major goals:
- Formally determine the effect of varying doses of retinoic acid on gene expression.
- Develop a cell culture model to test compounds for the ability to enhance expression of RAI-1.
This research is funded directly by fundraisers such as Dream for Damian. Every dollar raised by Dream for Damian and the SMS Research Foundation supports grant funding - which is why we believe in it so much.
